The core calculation is simple multiplication (bill × tip percentage), but the per-person split and the "round up" option are where the small details live. Splitting divides both the tip and the total evenly across the party size, which assumes an equal split rather than each person paying for exactly what they ordered — the simpler and far more common convention for casual group dining.
Rounding the total up to the nearest whole dollar (a common habit for simplifying cash payment) quietly changes the effective tip percentage, since the rounding difference gets added on top of the originally calculated tip. The calculator surfaces that effective percentage explicitly, so rounding up for convenience doesn't happen without knowing how much extra it actually adds.
