How it works

  1. Enter each course’s grade and credit hours

Use the Term GPA tab for a single term, or Cumulative GPA to roll a new term into your existing GPA.

  2. Add or remove courses as needed

The GPA recalculates live as you edit any grade or credit value.

  3. Read the weighted GPA

Higher-credit courses are automatically weighted more heavily than lower-credit ones.

GPA Calculator computes a grade point average the way most US colleges and universities do: each course's letter grade becomes a 4.0-scale grade point, that grade point is multiplied by the course's credit hours, and the resulting "quality points" are summed across all courses and divided by total credit hours.

This credit-weighting is the part a simple average of letter grades misses — an A in a 1-credit seminar and an A in a 4-credit core course don't contribute equally to your GPA, even though they look identical as letter grades. Weighting by credit hours is what makes GPA reflect the actual academic workload behind each grade.

The Cumulative GPA mode handles the common case of updating an existing GPA after a new term without re-entering every prior course: since GPA × total credits recovers the total quality points earned so far, that total can be combined with the new term's quality points and divided by the new combined credit total to get the updated cumulative GPA.

FAQ

How is GPA calculated?
Each letter grade is converted to grade points on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on), multiplied by that course’s credit hours to get "quality points," then all quality points are summed and divided by total credit hours. This means a 4-credit course affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course with the same grade.
What grade points does this use for +/- grades?
A standard US 4.0-scale mapping: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0. Some schools use slightly different scales (for example, some cap A+ above 4.0) — check your institution’s official scale if you need an exact transcript match.
How does the Cumulative GPA tab work without re-entering every past course?
A GPA and its credit-hour total already encode the total quality points earned so far (GPA × credits), so the calculator reconstructs that total, adds this term’s new quality points, and divides by the combined credits — without needing your full grade history.
