Grade Calculator combines a syllabus's weighted categories — homework, quizzes, midterms, a final exam, and so on — into a single overall course percentage and letter grade, the same weighted-average calculation an instructor's gradebook runs behind the scenes.

Each category's score is multiplied by its weight, those products are summed, and the sum is divided by the total weight entered. This is why a heavily-weighted final exam moves the overall grade far more per percentage point than a lightly-weighted homework category — the weighting is the entire point of the calculation, not an average of raw scores.

The "What Do I Need?" mode inverts the same formula: given the categories already graded and the weight of what's left, it solves for the average score on that remaining weight that would produce a chosen target overall grade. It's genuinely useful for deciding how much a final exam needs to matter before it happens, rather than only being able to check the grade after the fact.

FAQ

Why is this a weighted average instead of a plain average?
Courses typically weight categories differently — a final exam worth 50% of the grade should influence the overall percentage far more than a homework category worth 10%, regardless of how many individual assignments are in each category. A plain average of all scores would ignore that entirely.
Do the weights need to add up to exactly 100%?
It's recommended, since that matches how most syllabi define grade weighting, but the calculator doesn't require it — the weighted average is computed as a fraction of whatever total weight you've entered, so partial weightings (e.g. entering only the categories graded so far) still produce a valid percentage for what's been graded.
How does "What Do I Need?" work?
It takes your already-graded categories and their weights, combines them with the weight of what remains (like a final exam), and solves for the average score on that remaining weight that would bring your overall percentage up to your target. A result above 100% means the target isn’t reachable; a result below 0% means it’s already secured.
