There Is No International Shoe Size Standard — Here's What Fills the Gap

US, UK, and EU shoe sizes weren't designed as a single coordinated system — each has its own separate origin, which is why converting between them relies on foot length as the one thing they all actually agree on.

Clothing sizes are famously inconsistent across brands, but shoe sizes have an even deeper problem: there was never one global body that designed US, UK, and EU sizing together as a coordinated system. Each grew out of its own regional convention, at different times, using different logic — which is exactly why converting between them can't just be a fixed lookup table that everyone agrees on.

US sizing: built around a fixed-increment device

US shoe sizes come from the Brannock device — the metal foot-measuring tool still found in many shoe stores — which defines one full size as exactly 1/3 of an inch of foot length, with half sizes at 1/6 inch increments. This is a genuinely precise, mechanical definition: given a foot length in inches, the corresponding US size follows directly from a linear formula, no judgment calls involved. The anchor point (which foot length corresponds to which specific size number) is essentially a historical calibration choice, but once that anchor is set, the rest of the scale is exact arithmetic.

EU sizing: a completely different unit altogether

EU sizing didn't evolve from the same starting point — it comes from the "Paris point" system, which defines a shoe size directly from foot length in centimeters (roughly one size increment per two-thirds of a centimeter). Because it's built on a metric measurement from the start rather than derived from the US inch-based system, EU sizes don't line up with US sizes at clean, memorable numbers — a US size 9 becomes an EU 42, not a EU 45 or some other round-looking translation. The mismatch isn't sloppiness; it's two systems built on genuinely different base units (inches via 1/3-inch increments versus centimeters via Paris points) that were never intended to convert cleanly into each other.

Why foot length is the only fair common ground

Given that US and EU sizing don't share an origin, converting between them fairly requires a measurement both systems are actually built from: physical foot length. Converting a US size to a foot length, then that foot length to an EU size, avoids compounding two different systems' rounding and calibration choices directly against each other — it's the same principle behind routing unit conversions through one canonical unit rather than trying to memorize every pairwise relationship directly (the same approach ashoe size calculator uses, converting everything through centimeters rather than guessing at a direct US-to-EU multiplier).

Why "your size" still isn't fully solved by any of this

Even a foot-length-based conversion is only an approximation of fit, not a guarantee, because "shoe size" measures length along one axis while comfort also depends on width, the shape of a shoe's last, and how a specific brand cuts its uppers — factors that vary between manufacturers even at an identical labeled size. That's why sizing conversions are best treated as a solid starting point for narrowing down options, with a brand's own size chart (or trying the shoe on) as the final word whenever the fit actually matters.
